Our Application Process

Do you feel a tug in your heart to put your faith in action through offering your skills and talents in global mission?

Are you ready for a challenge through which you will be transformed yourself and make a difference in the lives of others?

Then Maryknoll Lay Missioners may be for you.

Committing to global mission is a big decision. Our application process therefore is a multi-step journey of mutual discernment that enables you and Maryknoll Lay Missioners to reflect deeply and weigh whether this decision feels like a good fit at this time.

We encourage you to start early to give you time to explore what overseas mission could mean in your life.

The following gives an overview of the application process.

Request Application Form

Complete the Request for Application form online. We accept requests for applications at any time throughout the year, but you must submit your form by May 15 to be eligible for orientation in the fall.

Phone Screening

After we receive your request for application form, we will contact you to schedule a brief initial interview by phone. This will allow you to ask questions about Maryknoll lay Missioners, and it will allow us to begin to get to know you.

Formal Application

If we mutually feel that Maryknoll Lay Missioners might be a good fit for you at this time, after the phone screening, we will send you the formal application, which includes reference forms, a personal essay, and medical history for you to fill out and send back to us.

In-Person Interview

We may reach out with additional questions after we receive your completed application. Once we have reviewed all the information we need, we will contact you to let you know whether we are inviting you for a full day of in-person interviews with our staff at our offices in Ossining, New York. If you accept our invitation, you will pay for your transportation to Ossining, but we will provide lodging and meals once you arrive.

Placement Process

If your interviews lead you and Maryknoll Lay Missioners to think we are a good fit, we will invite you to participate in our orientation program in the fall. In between your acceptance and orientation, we will work with you and with our Regional Directors overseas to match your skills, experience, and passions with the current ministry needs, trying to find a placement that will be a good fit for you.

Orientation Program

The orientation program is a time of continued mutual discernment for both you and Maryknoll Lay Missioners. During these 12 weeks both parties will make a final decision about whether global mission with Maryknoll Lay Missioners seems like a good match for you at this time in your life. The program will also allow you to get the training you need to be successful in cross-cultural ministry overseas. You will pay your way to Ossining, but lodging and meals will be provided once you arrive.

Go Overseas

At the end of orientation, you will sign a covenant and a contract, and you will participate in a sending ceremony that formally welcomes you to Maryknoll Lay Missioners and that celebrates your commitment to global mission. After the celebrations are over, you will return home for a few weeks of rest and have a chance to say goodbye to friends and family. The Maryknoll Lay Missioners in the country where you have been assigned will orient you to your new region, get you settled in housing, and guide you in getting started in ministry. In most cases, you will spend the first few months of your time in your host country in language school.
