PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA—After 25 years of dedicated service, Father Charles Dittmeier has retired from his ministry in Cambodia.
As news of his departure spread, three farewell celebrations were organized by the Deaf Development Programme (DDP), Maryknoll friends and missioners, and the English-speaking Catholic community. Fr. Charlie also shared many one-on-one meals with friends before leaving Cambodia on August 11, 2025. Across each gathering, people expressed deep gratitude for the wisdom, compassion, and presence he had given them over the years.
“Goodbyes are not forever, are not the end; it simply means I will miss you until I see you again.”

After Mass, community members—including choir, readers, altar servers, MKLM missioners, and DDP groups—gathered for photos and a farewell reception.
On August 11, Fr. Charlie departed for Kentucky, where he will reside with other retired priests and sisters from his diocese. Just days later, he traveled to Ossining, NY, to join the celebration of Maryknoll Lay Missioners’ 50th Jubilee.
We will miss you, Fr. Charlie—until we see you again.
Prayer for Fr. Charlie
“Lord, help (Fr. Charlie) live this day, quietly, easily. To lean upon thy great strength, trustfully, restfully. To wait for the unfolding of thy will, patiently, serenely. To meet others, peacefully, joyously. To face tomorrow, confidently and courageously.” —Saint Francis of Assisi

We were so fortunate to meet you in Cambodia Fr Charlie when we visited our daughter who spoke so highly of you. We thank you so much for your many many years of selfless service especially to the deaf community. You have been such a blessing to them and such example of Christ in serving. May God bless you in your well earned retirement. Jim and Trish Lawler
Charlie,
We were readied together to serve as Associate Priests with Maryknoll. Our preparation and orientation was shared with six other priest and the lay missioners in training. We all benefited from one another, cleric and baptized. Congratulations on the completion of your service in Cambodia. The rest of us continued to utilize our training in other paths, in other lands, after the formal connection with Maryknoll ended.
You graciously hosted me in Cambodia while I was serving as a cruise chaplain with Holland-America. The identification of your work and the beauty of the Cambodian culture were benefits of your gifted time with me.
Thank you for your ministry. I say that in a way that I cannot fully appreciate. Please let me hear from you when you return to Kentucky. Michigan isn’t that far away
Dear Charlie….Were you only in Cambodia for 25 years? It seems to me like you were always there even though I was in East Africa. When I came home to Illinois Minette Sternke in our parish spoke so highly of your work with the International Deaf community of which she is a member from St. Pat’s parish here. You are a citizen of the world bringing us all together with your fabulous communication skills and generous smile. Please keep in touch and stop for a visit when passing through Urbana IL on your way to somewhere. Mom and I would love to see you again!
Thanks, Julie, this is a wonderful article. Charlie, it was so good to see you in August at MK as you started your transition back to the US. Hoping it has continued to go well in all ways. much love to you dear friend.
Charlie; Mike and I knew you when you were serving the broader Asia area. Cambodia was blessed on so many levels to receive you and your services. We always experienced you as a community-minded team player, always ready to serve and participate. We’re sure the whole Maryknoll Mekong Mission has benefitted from your spirit. Thank you for your service !
And may you discover new delights in your coming years. God Bless, Juls & Mike Mueller-Hayes
