Haiti

Maryknoll Lay Missioners expanded into Gros Morne, Haiti, in 2018, reflecting the organization’s commitment to serving those most in need. Haiti suffers from levels of poverty and environmental degradation unparalleled in the Western hemisphere and has endured repeated natural disasters and political turmoil. Despite these challenges, Haiti is home to a proud, resourceful, and resilient people who are committed to overcoming obstacles and creating a better life. Currently, our lay missioners work in a rural community in sustainable development and educational ministries. The scope of our projects is likely to broaden as we continue to send new missioners to the region.

Ministry Areas

Education

Maryknoll lay missioners in Gros Morne are committed to working with the local community to provide better educational opportunities for children and youth in order to build a stronger future. MKLM works in schools where we offer support to students, provide training for teachers, and help to organize sports programs for local children.

Sustainable Development

Haitian farmers are challenged to grow crops in land that has been devastated by centuries of deforestation and poor soil management. Our missioners provide administrative support in two agricultural centers where local farmers receive training and learn how to farm more effectively using environmentally friendly methods. We are also supporting efforts to grow and plant trees in order to reverse the trend of deforestation.
