Join Maryknoll Lay Missioners: Africa International Membership 

A pilot program welcoming lay missioners from Kenya to serve in Tanzania.

Maryknoll Lay Missioners is a Catholic mission-sending community committed to nonviolence, reconciliation, and care for all creation. We work alongside communities across Africa, Asia, and the Americas, living and serving with those most excluded in society. 

We are launching a pilot program to welcome two lay missioners from Kenya to serve in Tanzania. If you feel called to serve with our community through long-term mission, we invite you to learn more and apply. 

 

Are You Eligible? 

To be considered for the Africa International Membership program, candidates must meet all of the following criteria: 

  • Catholic, and open and willing to work in interfaith settings 
  • 21 years of age or older and in good physical and mental health 
  • Kenyan citizen 
  • Single or married couple (both spouses must join)
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in experience and practice 
  • Willing to commit to 3 years of service in Tanzania 
  • Experience in serving and supporting others 
  • Experience in dialogue and interacting with people from different backgrounds and cultures 

How to Apply 

The application process includes the following steps: 

  1. Submit a Request for Application – Fill out a request for application and a team member will contact you.
  2. Attend a Webinar — Join one of our upcoming information webinars to learn more about missioner life and the application process.
  3. Q&A with an East Africa Representative — An East Africa representative will join the webinar to answer your questions.
  4. Application Submission and Screening — Submit your application for review, by September 30, 2026.
  5. Interviews — Selected candidates will be invited for interviews. 

 

What Happens Next 

  • Invitation to Orientation and Formation Program (OFP): November 2026
  • OFP in East Africa: January – March, 2027 – Tanzania and Kenya
  • Placement: April, 2027 – Tanzania

If you are considering applying to become a Maryknoll Lay Missioner, please note that we look for applicants who have:
• Skills that can be used in ministry in a cross-cultural setting.
• Prior experience (paid or volunteer) that prepares them to work with communities affected by poverty, conflict and/or marginalization.
• Prior experience (paid or volunteer) engaging with people from a different culture, background, or ethnicity in-country or international.
• A faith-based motivation and an interest in engaging in mission within the context of a Catholic community.

The priority deadline for submitting the full application packet is September 30, 2026. If all spots in that year’s orientation class are not filled after the September deadline, we will continue to accept applications through October 15, 2026. We recommend that you begin this first phase of the application process early so that you have enough time to complete all the required steps before the due date.
