In the newest episode of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers’ podcast “Among the People,” Lynn F. Monahan, Maryknoll magazine‘s editor-in-chief talks about his experiences as a Maryknoll lay missioner in Peru in the early 1990s. Working as a journalist for Latinamerica Press in Lima, Lynn witnessed and reported on the challenges and threats for church workers working among the poor during the time of the “Shining Path” Maoist guerrilla uprising in that country.
Lynn also shares stories from his work as the editor-in-chief of Maryknoll magazine and discusses his debut novel Pistaco: A Tale of Love in the Andes (ACTA Publications), which won a first-place award from the Catholic Press Association. The novel is inspired by Lynn’s lay missioner experience in Peru and tells the story of an American priest and a Peruvian school teacher, who “soon find themselves entrapped between a harsh military junta and Shining Path guerrillas who threaten mayhem across the mountain countryside.”
