Bishop John McCarthy, the retired bishop of Austin died Saturday August 18th in the evening in his Austin home. He had become a close friend and advocate of Maryknoll Lay Missioners over the last decade. He was a strong advocate of laity in mission and committed to many social justice issues.
I first met Bishop John in ‘09 and we hit it off right away. A few years later when Rhonda Paver joined the MKLM Board of Directors, I found out that she and her husband, Billy, were very close friends of the bishop and he joined them every Tuesday for dinner. Shortly thereafter he hosted an event at his home for MKLM with Marj Humphrey as the key speaker.
Bishop John wrote about Maryknoll Lay Missioners a few years ago, click HERE to read his blog.
Please keep this good, witty and prophetic shepherd in your prayers as he starts his new life in the fullness of God’s presence.
Sam Stanton, Maryknoll Lay Missioner
