Since May 2011, Alicia has been Maryknoll Lay Missioners’ U.S. Church Relations Manager. In this role, she cultivates, solicits, and coordinates the fulfillment of church dates for both the Mission Cooperative Plan (MCP) and for Invitational speaking engagements.

Maryknoll Lay Missioners considers its mission outreach work vital to our relationship with the U.S. Catholic Church.

Personal Data:

Alicia was born and raised in Bolivia and now lives in Brooklyn, NY. In Bolivia, she was a high school teacher in a poor neighborhood in Santa Cruz and taught Spanish at the Maryknoll Language School in Cochabamba.

Joining Maryknoll Lay Missioners in 1982, Alicia served in Bolivia alongside her husband, Bernie Butkiewicz. She focused on the creation of faith-based communities, grass roots indigenous organizations and in leadership formation. Alicia and her husband, a returned Maryknoll lay missioner, have three adult daughters, Ivanna, Lizzette and Maria Renee, all of whom were born in Bolivia.

Alicia has filled a number of leadership roles within MKLM, including Representative to the Maryknoll Society Regional Council, Regional Coordinator for the Bolivian Region, and Area Representative for Latin America. In 2003, she returned to the United States to serve on the Maryknoll Lay Missioners’ Leadership Team as Director of Missions. When this role ended in 2010, Alicia accepted her new position as U.S. Church Relations Manager.
