As a Maryknoll Lay Missioner in El Salvador I try to increase environmental awareness in the town of Monte San Juan where I live. One of our obvious problems is TRASH; there is no organized garbage collection or recycling service throughout the town, so litter ends up in the streets, in backyards, in the rivers. With a little seed money we constructed a bin to at least collect recyclable plastic bottles and aluminum cans and placed it near the snack bar in the Catholic parish. As people learn to use it, even bringing bottles from home to deposit there, we are able to save a little more recyclable material from just littering the countryside.
We would like to be able to put a similar collection container in each of the 12 villages of the town. The first bin cost about $50; people have some of the materials available but still need additional funds to pay for the wire mesh, hinges, etc. In this season of giving, can you help us to care for our common home, the planet Earth?
